Pender County Library Invites Public Input for Design of New Hampstead Branch Library

HAMPSTEAD – Pender County is designing a new, larger library in Hampstead and seeks input from the public to inform the design. This new library will replace the existing Pender County Library Hampstead Branch and will be located on Highway 17 next to the Pender County Government Annex.

To gather information on community needs, a survey is available online at penderpubliclibrary.org and in paper form at the Hampstead Branch Library (75 Library Drive) and the Main Library in Burgaw (103 S. Cowan Street). The survey is open from May 15 to June 23.

In addition, there will be several public input sessions at the Hampstead Branch Library: Tuesday, June 11 at 7:00 pm and Thursday, June 13 at 1:30 pm and 7:00 pm. There will also be a special session for parents on Wednesday, June 12 at 10:30 am, during which library staff will provide activities for children in a neighboring room.

The survey and in-person sessions aim to gather valuable insights into the community’s needs and interests. These insights will play a crucial role in shaping the design of the new library. By participating, community members can directly influence the initial stages of the design process, ensuring the architecture team understands the community’s needs from the start. We encourage all community members to participate in the survey and attend the public input sessions to share your ideas and help shape the future of our library!

PCU Addresses Sulfide Odor Issue in Hampstead/Scott’s Hill Water Supply Following New Well Activation

Hampstead, NC – Pender County Utilities (PCU) announces the recent approval and activation of three new well sites in the Hampstead/Scott’s Hill Area to address the growing water demand. This approval, obtained last week, ensures that PCU has the capacity to meet current water demands without implementing any water reductions.

While the new wells have been successful in maintaining an adequate water supply, we have received reports from some customers in the Scott’s Hill area of an unpleasant sulfide odor in the water following the activation of the EMS well. We want to assure our customers that the water from this new well meets all state and federal regulations and poses no health risks.

In response to these reports and in consultation with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), PCU has taken immediate action:

  • The EMS well has been shut off and isolated from the distribution system.
  • Flushing operations have been initiated in the affected area.

We expect customers to notice an improvement in water quality within the next 48 hours. The EMS well will remain offline until a thorough re-evaluation is completed to ensure the highest water quality standards are met.

PCU remains committed to maintaining the highest water quality standards and addressing any concerns raised by the community. The organization appreciates the understanding and patience of its customers as they work to resolve this issue.

Pender County Utilities Continues to Take Proactive Approach to Ensure Safe Drinking Water Amid New EPA Regulations

Pender County, NC—Monday night, Pender County Utilities (PCU) reported to the Pender County Board of County Commissioners and residents about its proactive measures regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) newly issued national regulatory limits for drinking water. These groundbreaking regulations are poised to significantly reduce PFAS exposure for millions nationwide, preventing countless serious illnesses.

The EPA’s ruling mandates enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for various PFAS compounds, including PFOA, PFOS, and GenX Chemicals. The Pender County Surface Water Treatment Plant is outfitted with state-of-the-art Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) vessels, ensuring the removal of organics and PFAS contaminants from raw water sourced from the Lower Cape Fear River. These GAC vessels have been operational since 2012, demonstrating PCU’s longstanding commitment to water quality.

Recent testing by Enthalpy Analytical, a trusted third-party laboratory, confirms PCU’s commitment to delivering safe, clean water to our community. Results show significant reductions in PFAS levels after treatment, well below the EPA’s mandated thresholds:

PFOA: Before Treatment: 4.47 ppt; After Treatment: 1.95 ppt (MCL: 4 ppt)

PFOS: Before Treatment: 8.09 ppt; After Treatment: 2.10 ppt (MCL: 4 ppt)

GenX: Before Treatment: 2.97 ppt; After Treatment: 2.13 ppt (MCL: 10 ppt)

PCU remains dedicated to advancing water treatment technologies. In anticipation of future regulatory standards, we are proud to announce plans for a new membrane filtration plant expected to be operational by 2028. This facility will ensure continued compliance with evolving federal and state regulations.

Furthermore, PCU is thrilled to announce that it received a $400,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Water Infrastructure to explore innovative strategies for combating “forever chemicals.” This funding underscores our commitment to staying at the forefront of water treatment innovation and safeguarding public health.

“We are proud to be at the forefront of ensuring safe and clean drinking water for our community,” stated Anthony Colon, Executive Director of Pender County Utilities. “PCU remains steadfast in our commitment to investing in advanced treatment methods and staying ahead of regulatory requirements. With the support of our dedicated team and valued partners, we will continue to lead the way in providing high-quality water services to the residents of Pender County.”
