Pender County Emergency Management reminds residents it’s time to prepare, stay alert

The Pender County Office of Emergency Management urges residents to prepare for Potential Tropical Cyclone 16, it is expected to acquire tropical characteristics today through tonight as it approaches the NC coast.

“Pender County Emergency Management is closely monitoring Potential Tropical Cyclone 16,” said Tommy Batson, Pender County Emergency Management director. “This storm is expected to bring some heavy rainfall and gusty winds as it passes just off shore”

According to the latest reports, Pender County will be impacted by heavy rainfall and gusty winds through Sunday morning. This could result in some downed limbs, trees, and power lines. Some coastal flooding may occur.

If you don’t have a hurricane emergency kit, there is time to assemble a kit. Have batteries, plenty of drinking water, non-perishable foods, medications, cash, a full tank of fuel in your vehicles, and propane in stock. A complete checklist is available online at www.readync.org.

Batson said the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) staff will continue to monitor the storm.

“When preparing, keep in mind the items you need to maintain the health and safety of your family and pets,” said Batson. “This is the time to secure lawn furniture and items that can be lifted away by strong winds gust.”

Pender County Human Resources was pleased to welcome Jennifer Haigwood, Department of Labor OSH Deputy Commissioner, at the Oct. 17 Pender County Board of Commissioners meeting. Haigwood presented Pender County departments safety awards as follows:

Where do you want to go? RideMICRO

Pender County residents and visitors have an additional travel option. It’s called RideMICRO. And it is perfect for a resident who needs to get to a doctor’s appointment, college classes, or shopping. It’s perfect for tourists who aren’t certain where they are going, or don’t have a rental car large enough for the multi-generational vacation.

“RideMICRO is a WAVE Transit service,” said Brianna D’Itri, the Mobility Manager at the Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority. “RideMICRO functions like an UBER or a taxi, only cheaper.”

Called “MICRO” for short, the service area includes Pender, Brunswick, and New Hanover counties.

“This allows us more connectivity,” said D’Itri.

While MICRO is public transit, it isn’t your grandparents’ city bus or shuttle bus. MICRO uses smaller vans and a Suburban to get riders from point A to point B.

“MICRO is divided into zones,” said D’Itri. “Pender County is Zone 2.”

Riders can book transportation to and from Pender County daily or just for special occasions.

“Some of our riders going to dialysis, or just grocery shopping or to work or school,” said D’Itri, adding that the youngest daily rider is a 14-year-old who attends college classes.

D’itri said passengers use MICRO for a ride to and from the airport, which saves on parking fees and taxi fares. Riders who are shopping downtown or who want a trip to the beach where parking fees apply can save parking fees as well.

“It’s very convenient,” said D’Itri. “There are three ways to book a ride: download the RideMICRO app on your smartphone, complete an online form at our website, or call us toll-free.”

A ride anywhere in the service area is just $2 per person per trip. Riders can pay online with a debit card or pay cash. Children under the age of 4 years old ride free.

RideMICRO also offers wheelchair accessibility. D’Itri recommended that riders concerned about accessibility can call the toll-free number and a service representative will answer concerns.

MICRO is a pilot program, and the WAVE Authority is pleased to have this year to evaluate the needs and wants of their riders. They see expansion and additional service areas in the future.

“Our goal is to service residents’ and visitors’ needs,” said D’Itri.

Pender County departments receive safety awards from NC Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson

On Oct. 4, NC Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson presented Pender County departments with awards for safety.

Receiving first-year awards were Animal Control, Animal Shelter, Emergency Management, Facilities and Fleet Services, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology Services, and Planning and Community Development.

Receiving Third Consecutive Year honors were Social Services and Tourism.

Seventh Consecutive Year awards were presented to the Register of Deeds and the Tax Assessors Office.

Ninth Consecutive Year honors were presented to the Library.

Tenth Consecutive Year honors went to Elections and Housing.

Eleven Consecutive Years without a major safety violation or injury were presented to the County Manager’s Office, Mosquito Control, Parks and Recreation, Vehicle Maintenance, and Veterans Services.

 

County online payments will be not be available on Oct. 12

System upgrade will make online payments impossible on Oct. 12

 BURGAW- Pender County’s online payments system will be offline Oct. 12 due to a software upgrade.

Residents and property owners will not have the ability to pay taxes, permitting fees, or utilities online on Oct. 12.

Walk-in services for payment will be available, but all account numbers must be provided at the time of service. Clerks will provide handwritten receipts on Oct. 12. In the tax office, please bring documents that identify the property or account you wish to make a payment to, as staff will not be able to look up your property.

All walk-in payments will not be posted until Oct. 13.
