Precinct Officials

Precinct officials, also called poll workers, operate the polls during early voting and on Election Day.  Duties performed include setting up the voting equipment, checking in voters, issuing ballots, assisting voters with special needs, and closing down/securing the voting site at the end of the day.

Qualifications

  • Be 18 and a registered voter in Pender County
  • Have great communication and customer service skills
  • Not currently be an office-holder, candidate or near relative of a candidate, or treasurer of an open committee
  • Not currently be an official of a political party, including precinct party officials
  • Be able to work the entire day on Election Day from 5:30 am until at least 8:30 pm if scheduled to work
    • this may involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Have moderate computer skills

Student Election Assistants

In 2003, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a law allowing high school students to work in the polls on election day, if they meet certain requirements.

Requirements

In order to serve as a North Carolina Student Election Assistant, a student must:

  • Be a United States citizen;
  • Be at least 17 years old by Election Day;
  • Be a resident of the county in which you will serve;
  • Be enrolled in a public or private high school or home school;
  • Be in good academic standing;
  • Have permission from your parent, guardian, or legal custodian;
  • Have permission from your school principal or director.
