Pender County Emergency Management Updates on Flooding and Weather Conditions

PENDER COUNTY, NC – Swiftwater rescue teams and equipment are actively supporting local emergency services as rising floodwaters affect the county. The Black River and Northeast Cape Fear River are continuing to swell, leading to warnings and road closures. Residents are urged to take precautionary measures. Significant weather changes are expected to impact the situation over the coming days.

River Updates:

Black River:

  • NC Hwy 210 is currently at 9.6 feet and still rising.
  • The river has crested in Sampson County, dropping one foot in the past 24 hours.
  • The Black River is expected to crest at Beatty Bridge later today.

Northeast Cape Fear River:

  • NC Hwy 53 is currently at 16.24 feet.
  • The crest is forecasted to reach 16.50 feet tomorrow.
  • It will take at least five days before the river crests at Lanes Ferry, which could lead to flooding on NC Hwy 210.

Residents are advised to seek alternative routes and stay updated on road closures via DriveNC.gov.


County Operations:

  • County offices remain open.
  • The Holly Shelter Shooting Range is closed until further notice due to rising water on Shaw Highway.

Weather Forecast:

  • Today: Partly sunny with a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. Some thunderstorms may produce heavy rainfall—highs in the upper 80s, with north winds around 5 mph.
  • Tonight: Mostly cloudy with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms in the evening, then partly cloudy after midnight. Some thunderstorms may produce heavy rainfall—lows in the lower 70s, with northeast winds around 5 mph.
  • Cooler air is expected to enter the forecast, reducing the chances of storms for the rest of the week.
