Plans for the Montague convenience site were delayed while county staff worked to identify and evaluate a suitable location. A location has now been selected, and the project is moving into the next phase of required reviews before construction can begin.
Before development can begin, the site must meet several standards and regulatory requirements. These include zoning and local approvals, environmental and solid waste management review, operational requirements for convenience centers, site design standards and soil testing.
These steps are required to ensure the facility can operate safely and responsibly. Environmental review and soil testing help determine whether the property can support the facility, while zoning and site design standards ensure the site meets local regulations and operational guidelines.
Pender County understands the delay has been difficult for residents and recognizes the importance of having a convenient disposal site available. County staff are working to ensure the selected location meets all necessary requirements so the facility can be safely developed and opened for the community as soon as possible.
These requirements are part of the county’s responsibility to protect public health, safety and the surrounding environment. County staff will continue working through the necessary evaluations as the project moves forward.
Pender County will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
