Summary:
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect. Heavy snow, strong winds, and extremely cold temperatures will create dangerous conditions across the region. Residents should prepare for hazardous travel, possible power outages, and extreme cold.
What to Expect:
- Snow & Ice: Significant snow possible across northeast SC and southeast NC, with heavier amounts likely north of the Cape Fear region. Dry, powdery snow combined with gusty winds may reduce visibility and traction.
- Wind & Marine Conditions: Winds 25–35 mph may cause blowing snow and localized whiteout conditions. Gale to storm-force gusts expected over coastal waters.
- Cold & Wind Chill: Temperatures will drop sharply, with wind chills in the single digits Saturday and Sunday nights. Extended cold may persist into midweek.
- Travel: Roads may become dangerous or impassable. Travel delays and closures are possible.
Impacts:
- Hazardous driving conditions and poor visibility.
- Scattered power outages are expected.
- Hazardous winds and seas for the coastal waters over the weekend, creating dangerous conditions for mariners.
Preparedness & Safety Tips:
- Reconsider travel plans; avoid driving if possible.
- Stock emergency supplies: drinking water, batteries, flashlights, power banks, blankets, and warm clothing.
- Use generators safely: operate outdoors, keep at least 20 ft from buildings, follow manufacturer guidelines, and store fuel safely.
Follow the 5 P’s:
- People: Dress warmly, limit exposure to extreme cold, and check in on your friends, family, and neighbors.
- Plants: Bring sensitive plants indoors or protect them from freezing.
- Pets: Ensure pets have warm shelter and are not left in cold conditions.
- Pipes: Insulate exposed pipes and allow faucets to drip when needed.
- Use heaters safely, keep them clear of combustibles, and never leave them unattended.
Remain informed, flexible, and prepared to modify plans and take preparedness actions if needed.
