Pender Convenience Waste Sites Temporarily Closed Due to Inclement Weather
Burgaw, Rocky Point and Hampstead waste sites are now open.
BURGAW – Due to the recent winter storm, Pender County closed all convenience waste sites. Three solid waste sites are now open.
“The recent ice and snow storm has created hazardous conditions for safe use at our Pender Solid Waste sites,” stated Bryan McCabe, interim director of Pender County Utilities.
McCabe said three sites, located in Burgaw, Rocky Point, and Hampstead, have concrete bases, which are currently being plowed and treated. The remaining sites with gravel bases will not be plowed at this time.
“We have evaluated the three concrete sites in Burgaw, Rocky Point, and Hampstead for safety issues,” said McCabe. “The sites are open today and the Hampstead site will also open on Sunday, Jan. 7 for normal operating hours.”
Residents should check the local media outlets, such as the Pender County Facebook Page before traveling to the Solid Waste Sites. Travel conditions may still not be safe and residents are urged not to travel until conditions improve.
All other Pender County sites will return to normal operating hours Monday, Jan. 8, weather permitting.
“We know this is an inconvenience for our Pender County residents,” state Randell Woodruff, county manager. “However, public safety is our upmost concern during this winter storm.”
Pender Solid Waste (PSW) serves as the management and administrative organization responsible for the collection, hauling, and proper disposal of approximately 35,000 tons per year of municipal solid waste (MSW) and construction and demolition (C&D) debris in Pender County. There are 12 convenience centers located throughout the county as well as a Transfer Station located near Highway 17 North in Hampstead.
