David Peterson, a water treatment operator at Pender County Utilities, demonstrated exceptional alertness on June 15 when he noticed smoke and flames emerging from the rooftop of Coastal Beverage's facility in the Pender County Commerce Park.
Responsible for operations and monitoring the county's surface water treatment plant, Peterson acted swiftly, immediately alerting emergency services by dialing 911.
Multiple fire departments, including Pender Fire EMS, responded promptly to Peterson's alert, successfully containing the fire and mitigating potential damage. Anthony Colon, executive director of Pender County, commended Peterson's quick thinking and proactive response, noting that his actions played a pivotal role in not just minimizing but preventing further damage to the property.
Reflecting on the incident, Peterson remained modest, stating, "I only did what seemed right to do on this occasion." His actions highlight his dedication to public service and community safety, embodying the commitment expected of essential personnel in Pender County.
Peterson will be recognized at the upcoming July 17 Pender County Board of County Commissioners meeting.
